thank you for listening to me whine for a moment. you are all so sweet-- and you have great advice. i will start 'filtering' and begin again to do what i love.

and since you are all waiting on pins and needles for more halloween costumes. . . your wish is my command!

i actually made 6 costumes this year (like the past 4 years!), three for my little chiclets and three for my best friend's three little girlies.

three super-heroes were on the menu. . .

wonder woman, complete with boots, cape, belt, dress, wrist bands and head band.

and batgirl, complete with a mask.

now that's some girl power!

(warning: wordy, somewhat whiny post to follow. . .)

i am still having a hard time getting back into the groove of blogging.

perhaps i spend too much time on pinterest (definite yes!).

or maybe i am just blogged out, but it really seems like there isn't much left to blog about.

it has all been done.

i can't tell you how many variations of the same scarf i see day after day. . .

and if i want to make a curtain for my window, i don't have sit and figure it out all by myself, i can google it and find a fantastic tutorial all ready to go!

but who wants to read about and see pictures of my using someone else's tutorial? BOORRRRINNNGGG!

the really successful bloggers have number 1: fantastic photos.

i don't have a big, fancy-schmancy camera.

number 2: they often have 'new' ideas. something we haven't seen twenty times before.

i am apparently not that creative. my ideas either don't work out or someone else comes up with the same thing, only they publish their idea the week before i get mine done.

and theirs looks better.

and is easier to understand.

for instance, i have recently tried making my own laundry detergent, after seeing it pinned daily for months. it is awesome. i love it. so, i started working on a blog post about it. i took pictures, spent time calculating costs, spent time coming up with something witty to say about it, uploading pictures, etc. and then i realized that everyone else has probably already seen several laundry detergent recipes. the one i used had really cool looking pics-- much better than mine. and i was spending lots of time to just 're-post' something that has already been done.

this dress i first saw on grosgrain and wanted so badly to copy it.

a few months later, the darling little blog Un Petit Design recreated it AND added a free pattern AND has simply adorable photos to go along with it.

so what do you think? what do you enjoy seeing on a sewing blog? what inspires you to continue to blog about the things you create? where do you find your ideas?

am i just lacking passion?

or maybe just an overload of (other people's) ideas?

family tree quilt

the highlight of our summer was a family reunion held in island park. it was the hub's family, including his grandparents, their four children, their 19 grandchildren and 25+ great-grandkids.

my contribution to the cause was a quilt-- a family tree quilt to be given to grandma and grandpa p at the reunion.

as i searched for some inspiation online, i found this quilt by sandra saunders. loved it! had to recreate it.

each branch of the tree represents one of the four children.

grandma and grandpa's initials are carved into the tree with embroidered hearts around them.

and each family has their own circle with the handprints layered, oldest to youngest.

a simple backing-- i wish you could see the quilting. it was kinda cool--

the presentation-- i'm pretty sure g and g loved it.

they even sent me a box of chocolates as a 'thank you'. oh! they were so yum!

it has been a while. . . how are you? how were your holidays? do any fun holiday sewing?

do you know how much i wish we lived closer and could actually sew together?

last january, my sis-in-law had twin girlies (so fun!). she asked me to make their blessings dresses (yay!) and even sent her wedding dress to use for fabric (double yay!).

and here is the end result:

the dress was inspired by the original baptism dress (pattern and tutorial here).

i used this tutorial to make these dresses, adding a little nylon chiffon ruffle between the lining and dress.

the headbands have a button from their mama's wedding dress on them.

and this one just had to be in their so you could see their actual cuteness! the best pinch-able cheekies ever!

and i have some more catching up to do. . . so stay tuned!

so, the original baptism dress

was made for my best friend's daughter, who turned 8 early in 2010.

(she is the photographer that took the AMAZING photos! Can you please, please, PLEASE move closer?)

her second daughter turned 8 this spring and i got to create an entirely new look.

so, i give you baptism dress version 3.0 (modeled by k1, but made for a b):

lots of pretty ruffles,

a touch of lace,

and a ribbon sash.

the simple back.

anybody extremely quick on their feet and recognize my inspiration?

if any of you find it strange that i am making a baptism dress for an eight year old, let me explain. we, my friend and i and our families, belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. in our religion, we give babies a name and a blessing as newborns, but do not baptize our children until they are eight. it is a very special, sacred occasion and i feel so blessed that even though i could not be there for b's, i could be a part of it by making her special dress.

we are so proud of your decision, b! wish we could have been there with you.

so, here is how it works. there are two documents for you to download and print. the first is the instructions (click here), and the pattern pieces (click here). the only size i have available right now is a size 8. perhaps, someday. . . but no promises! ;0)

second chances. . .

last week i was eliminated.

and then, one of the other competitors needed to drop out for personal reasons.

a second chance. . .

i feel a little like Joshua C on project runway. i guess we will see if my run ends in the same way. . .

but i did have fun with this challenge. just a little risky. . . making girls clothes on 'boy week'.

but one thing i learned from the first two weeks, is that you can't please everyone. . . it is best to make something that i like. and just leave it at that.

given the late notice on replacing Alexis, i only had one day to complete six individual pieces, as well as take pictures. it was a crazy day, in which i may or may not have been able to take a shower.

but it was so fun to have all three of them together in a picture for once.

whew! just barely made it past last week. . .

i am starting to have much more sympathy for project runway contestants.

not only are you supposed to produce your best work in a short period of time, putting your creative self to the test, but you also run a complete gamut of emotions. combining emotional exhaustion with the creative process does not produce great results.

first you really like your design.

then you question if it is good enough.

and wonder if you should just start over.

or quit.

or cry.

and then, the voting starts.

you do cry.

you doubt yourself.

then you pull yourself together and form a plan on how you are going to improve.

then you cry some more.

then create your next look.

i am loving the maxi dress trend of the moment-- but it hasn't really taken a spot in the kid's market yet.

when we were given Lil Blue Boo's pattern to remix, my first thought was to make it a maxi.

add some lace and a funky neckline and you have a whole new style!

little miss sure is turning into quite the model!

baptism dress, version 2.0

i can not believe the day has actually come and gone.

my oldest, k1 has turned eight years old.

wow.

that sure went fast. it certianly doesn't seem like it has been eight years.

but it has.

and an eighth birthday is a special one. as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are baptized at the age of eight.

and in brown paper packages tradition, a special dress was in order.

traditionally a baptism dress is white, but i went with green. and it is another copycat design. the original was made by grosgrain kathleen. here is her version, complete with fantastic photography:

and when did she get so tall?

i am pretty darn proud of myself on this one. i actually put in an invisible zipper-- and it looks good! the lace stripes even match up.

that is one of the best parts of sewing-- seeing progress, being able to improve on a skill.

are any of you project runway fans?

a couple episodes ago (the stilts one), one of the judges made the comment to anthony ryan that they felt like they had 'seen' his design before and that he needed to make sure his designs were unique.

hmm. this gave me some serious thinking material. really? is there really anything that is completely unique? i mean, fashion has been around for an awful long time. . . how many truly unique styles could there still be out there?

but it also made me realize that i am more of a 'copycat artist' than an actual designer. my ideas come from other places. sometimes more than one idea mixed with another. . . but really i don't have much that is 'original.'

and maybe that is okay. maybe that is how everyone starts.

any thoughts?

okay, but back to sewing. last spring my very fashionable sister emailed me this picture:

she asked if i could possibly re-create it, as it was no longer available in stores.

sure thing.

i always see this as kind of a challenge-- to actually make something that is wearable, doesn't fall apart immediately and looks decent.

how are you?

it feels like it has been forever since we talked. . .

it has been a nice summer, albeit waaaayyyy too short.

but i have missed you!

so i am back. which some of you may already know, if you follow the sewing-blogland community. but in case any of you missed it, you can see an actual picture of me here, on project run and play.

now you may be thinking: project run and play? really? as in, that little contest that katy from no big dill and kelly from sewing in no man's land and ashley from lil blue boo did last spring?

and here is my answer: (clearing throat) ummmm, yes, yes that is the one i am talking about.

so am i feeling overwhelmed? a little (lot) intimidated? excited? terrified?

yep. all of the above.

and my first post didn't help me to feel any better.

i kinda like the picture (could it be any bigger?!?!?). the intro leaves a little (LOT) to be desired. i can't decide if i am just a boring person or lack creativity in descriptions. . . but whatever! nobody goes to the project run and play blog to read about the designers, right? we go to see the designs!

and it feels SO.GOOD. to design again.

it has been a while since i have had a good reason/desire to design something new.

mother's day

i know i am way behind. . . sorry about that! just bare (or is it 'bear'?) with me a little and i will get caught up. . .

for easter this year, we had stake conference. really? on easter? needless to say, making darling easter dresses just didn't make it on the priority list this year.

i did manage to get one made for mother's day. . . for my littlest. isn't she precious? i just love that little face.

i made this dress from a woman's skirt. you will have to forgive me-- i didn't take any pictures while making it, but i will try to explain my process.

the skirt was a knee-length, full skirt with a shirred waistband. i chopped the waistband off, several inches below the actual waistband.

i used a rectangle of fabric that was about 5 inches wide and about 12 inches long, times 2. i shirred it all up to make the bodice, with a rolled hem edge at the top. then i gathered the skirt and attached it to the bottom of the bodice.

the waistband of the original skirt made perfect little straps for the dress. i just cut them the right length for her shoulders and attached them to the top of the shirred bodice. the ruffle is just the raw edge from where i cut the skirt off. super easy, but oh so sweet!

as sweet as this little booger looks, however, she can be quite the stinker!

did i ever tell you that she chopped her own hair? yes, in december she gave herself a mullet and a full set of bangs. yuck! i am thrilled that it is starting to be long enough now to pull it back again. and this little hair-do keeps those front and side wispies all in place.

and not only is she a 'do-it-yourselfer', she is also extremely stubborn. on mother's day, at church, she was brought to me, needing to be taken potty. we start heading down the hallway and she tells me she wants to do it herself.

ummm, what?

that's a first, even for her. but she insists, so i follow discretely behind her down the hallway. i stop to talk to someone, while trying to watch her at the same time. she dissappears into the bathroom and i decide it is time to help. she is only 2 after all.

i march into the women's bathroom and do a thorough search-- no k3. i start getting a little nervous. where could she have gone to? i was fairly certain i saw her go into the bathroom. . .

oh.

she can't read.

MENS room, here i come.

i stop a little boy coming out of the men's room and ask if he saw a little girl in a girl in a green dress in there.

yup.

is there anyone else in there?

nope.

great.

i slowly and loudly make my way into the men's room and see my little twerp thoroughly intrigued by the urinal. i quickly grab her and exit the men's room.

thank you for that, my little one. what a fabulous mother's day gift.

This has become one of my very favorite healthy recipes:

cauliflower with bacon and pinenuts-- YUM! i throw in some shredded rotisserie chicken and call it a meal. you can find the recipe here.

this one is the hubby's fave. baked zucchini with mozerella. i made mine with smoked mozerella. expensive stuff, but oh, so yum!

Like a Currant Bush

This weekend is one of my favorite weekends of the year.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we have what is called General Conference twice a year. It is a time when we watch on TV or internet, the general officers of the church speak to the all the members collectively.

It is so spiritually uplifting. . .

A time to learn, a time to be humble, a time to feel loved, a time to grow. . .

I love this man! He is the president and prophet of our church--

President Thomas S. Monson.

While watching conference today, a story was shared that kind of hit me hard. A story of a currant bush from Hugh B. Brown. It is kinda long. . . but a very good read:

I was living up in Canada. I had purchased a farm. It was run-down. I went out one morning and saw a currant bush. It had grown up over six feet high. It was going all to wood. There were no blossoms and no currants. I was raised on a fruit farm in Salt Lake before we went to Canada, and I knew what ought to happen to that currant bush. So I got some pruning shears and clipped it back until there was nothing left but stumps. It was just coming daylight, and I thought I saw on top of each of these little stumps what appeared to be a tear, and I thought the currant bush was crying. I was kind of simpleminded (and I haven’t entirely gotten over it), and I looked at it and smiled and said, “What are you crying about?” You know, I thought I heard that currant bush say this:

“How could you do this to me? I was making such wonderful growth. I was almost as big as the shade tree and the fruit tree that are inside the fence, and now you have cut me down. Every plant in the garden will look down on me because I didn’t make what I should have made. How could you do this to me? I thought you were the gardener here.”

That’s what I thought I heard the currant bush say, and I thought it so much that I answered. I said, “Look, little currant bush, I am the gardener here, and I know what I want you to be. I didn’t intend you to be a fruit tree or a shade tree. I want you to be a currant bush, and someday, little currant bush, when you are laden with fruit, you are going to say, ‘Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for loving me enough to cut me down. Thank you, Mr. Gardener.’ “

Years passed, and I found myself in England. I was in command of a cavalry unit in the Canadian Army. I held the rank of field officer in the British Canadian Army. I was proud of my position. And there was an opportunity for me to become a general. I had taken all the examinations. I had the seniority. The one man between me and the office of general in the British Army became a casualty, and I received a telegram from London. It said: “Be in my office tomorrow morning at 10:00,” signed by General Turner.

I went up to London. I walked smartly into the office of the general, and I saluted him smartly, and he gave me the same kind of a salute a senior officer usually gives—a sort of “Get out of the way, worm!” He said, “Sit down, Brown.” Then he said, “I’m sorry I cannot make the appointment. You are entitled to it. You have passed all the examinations. You have the seniority. You’ve been a good officer, but I can’t make the appointment. You are to return to Canada and become a training officer and a transport officer.” That for which I had been hoping and praying for 10 years suddenly slipped out of my fingers.

Then he went into the other room to answer the telephone, and on his desk, I saw my personal history sheet. Right across the bottom of it was written, “THIS MAN IS A MORMON.” We were not very well liked in those days. When I saw that, I knew why I had not been appointed. He came back and said, “That’s all, Brown.” I saluted him again, but not quite as smartly, and went out.

I got on the train and started back to my town, 120 miles away, with a broken heart, with bitterness in my soul. And every click of the wheels on the rails seemed to say, “You are a failure.” When I got to my tent, I was so bitter that I threw my cap on the cot. I clenched my fists, and I shook them at heaven. I said, “How could you do this to me, God? I have done everything I could do to measure up. There is nothing that I could have done—that I should have done—that I haven’t done. How could you do this to me?” I was as bitter as gall.

And then I heard a voice, and I recognized the tone of this voice. It was my own voice, and the voice said, “I am the gardener here. I know what I want you to do.” The bitterness went out of my soul, and I fell on my knees by the cot to ask forgiveness for my ungratefulness and my bitterness. While kneeling there I heard a song being sung in an adjoining tent. A number of Mormon boys met regularly every Tuesday night. I usually met with them. We would sit on the floor and have Mutual. As I was kneeling there, praying for forgiveness, I heard their singing:

“But if, by a still, small voice he calls

To paths that I do not know,

I’ll answer, dear Lord, with my hand in thine:

I’ll go where you want me to go.”

As I was listening to this story, I started to realize that I am like the currant bush. I am trying to grow into this large bush-- without actually producing any fruit.

Everytime there is a disaster of some kind, I always have so much admiration for those that jump to it and have some great idea as to how to help. Well, THIS time, I decided to just do it-- take the inspiration from so many others and DO something!

And while money is still pretty tight in our household, I decided that perhaps I could use my talents instead.

So, I am going to auction a couple of things in the following posts. 100% of the profit will go directly towards relief in Japan.

For auction #1, I will make a dress using the As You Like It pattern and an upcycled sheet. You can pick the size, from 2T to girls size 8. The bottom of the dress will be made like the one pictured, using a circle skirt with bias trim on the bottom. The sheet I will use is a light yellow color with bits of orange and green (picture of the exact sheet will come later!).

And of course, no dress would be complete without a matching headband.

If you are interested in getting one of these for your little princess, leave a comment with your name, a contact email and the price you would be willing to pay. By leaving a comment, you are committing to purchase the item, should you be the highest bidder.

If any of you have been hanging around here for very long, you will know this dress. It is one of my all time faves!

I am not sure I could count the number of times I have actually used my pattern-- I've had to re-print it many, many times.

I just whipped a few up for my brand new twin neices yesterday and how fun! To make a baby size, it doesn't take that much fabric. Scraps-- HELLO! And so many combinations possible! I am thinking it might become my 'go-to baby gift' (for girls, that is!).

Before The Sewing Dork and I even started Pattern Review month, I had several people request boy patterns. Hmmmm. Seeing as how neither of us have boys, it is a challenging request. Have you ever checked out this magazine? Ottobre Designs has some really fun boy patterns. And many, many girl patterns as well. Their patterns tend to be a little more complex than the simple pdf patterns. But so many options!

Another source for boy patterns are Japanese Pattern Books. One of the largest Japanese Pattern Book stores that I have found is Pompadour24 on eBay. Wouldn't it be fun to make one of these? Now, if only I read Japanese.

And one of my favorite places to find cute patterns-- the THRIFT STORE! Again, not as many boy patterns, but the ones you do find are quite unique. Vintage patterns are by far, my fave. Pattern Review- Heidi and Finn

There are some great individual pattern designers out there-- and one of the cutest little pattern stores is Heidi and Finn. I found their store on Etsy while ago, but didn't get around to purchasing an actual pattern until just a couple of weeks ago. The designs are simple but modern. The clothes come together very quickly and the end product is to die for! Check out my Cowl Neck Jumper Dress for Miss K2.

Sizes Included: Girls 12 months to 6

What I Like about this Pattern: So simple to make! And yet, look at the results. Totally wearable and modern. Love it!

Anything I Would Change: I made the size 6 for my petite six year old and it ended up a little short in length and the sleeves. (I didn't end up hemming them-- gotta love knit fabric! and it is still several inches above the knee.) And again, I so wish there was a size 8 included. Or, I don't know, maybe even one in MY size.

PS I made the leggings from an upcycled sweater, using this tutorial. Quick and easy and very **winter-y**.

What I like about this pattern: Ummm, have you SEEN this skirt? Fabulous! It is like the an updated version of a pettiskirt. AND you can make it in any size! Don't you just want to make one for yourself?

Anything I would change: Well, in order for the pattern to be in any size, you have to do some of your own math. Not a big deal really, just takes a little more time. Also, the skirt is a little time-consuming. It can be slightly tedious, but hello?!? Totally worth it!

I bet you didn't even know that I crocheted! ;0) I remember the first time I showed my grandma a crocheted afghan I had made for her. One of the first things she told me was that now I needed to learn to knit because it looks more professional. I am not a magazine person. They just seem like they cost a lot for what they are. . . however, a magazine with lots of patterns in it? Definitely worth the money!

Pattern Format: Sewing intuctions available in the Spring 2010 Stitch Magazine. The pattern pieces can be downloaded and printed here.

Sizes Included: Sizing is a little confusing on this one. It says it is size 3-4, but the pattern pieces have a small, medium and large sizing. I would say it is about a 2, 4 and 6, maybe?

What I liked about the pattern: It is a DARLING dress! Sewing instructions were clear.

Anything I would change: I wish the sizing were a little more clear. Also, if you can't see it in the pictures, the pattern has all princess seams. That means a LOT of pieces and a LOT of work for a little girl's dress. You feel pretty darn proud of yourself when you get done, but during the process it is kind of a challenge. (And requires making a LOT of narrow bias tape-- even more if you are making FOUR dresses!)

Don't hate me, but. . .

I haven't used very many Oliver + S patterns.

It is not that I don't like them, I just haven't gotten around to purchasing any of them yet. (You would think I would be inclined to, since she has the same name as me! Spelled a little different-- but a very rare occurence.)

So when she published a free pattern (yes, free!) for a ruffled halter top, YIPPEE!

I printed it off and whipped up three of them.

What I liked about the pattern: Amazingly well written! Ingenius design and it comes together so easily.

Anything I would change: It is just a lot of work to print such a large pattern and piece it all together. However, for a free pattern, I certainly can't complain!

Confessions of a Computer-aholic

I spend way too much time on the computer each day. Check the email, do the banking, check our movie queue, check my blog roll, check facebook. . . there always seems to be something to check.

And lately, I had added to the list (like I NEED something more to fill up my time!). And I blame it all on Vanessa of V & Co. A couple months ago, she shared a post about playing a game on facebook. Well, she peeked my interest. And I tried it.

Sounds lame, right? Ummm, it is. But it is also very addicting.

Yes, I am an addict.

There you have it. I am now out of the closet. So, why am I sharing this, you ask. Good question. I need some neighbors. Apparently very few of my friends have the same addiction as I do.

A pathetic addiction, and an even more pathetic reason for sharing said addiction.

If there are any other of you that are 'closet gamers' and need a few neighbors on Cityville or Frontierville, I would love to add some friends!

(And maybe I won't feel so pathetic. . . )

Quilted Friday

I was thinking-- I would love to see your quilted creations as well as your clothing items. So once in a while I am going to host a quilted party on Fridays! You can link up anything 'quilty'.

My quilty goodness for the month is for these two:

My sister-in-law's twinners! They arrived last week, 5 weeks early and weighing in at 5 lbs. 10 ozs. and 5 lbs. 15 ozs. Aren't they sweet?

And I don't know what it is, but I find it so fun to make stuff for twins! Maybe it is because I love color, and with twins I get to make two of everything in different colors. Like quilts, for instance:

Chevron stripes! Love it. I was suprised at how difficult this one turned out to be. Maybe I just suck at cutting properly or something, but my squares had a really hard time matching up. Thankfully, by the time they are quilted and washed, it is harder to see all the little mis-matches.

And for the back:

Oooooo! I LOVE these fabrics! They are from Sandi Henderson's Meadowsweet II line.

Huh. . . How long has it been since I did one of these?

Far too long! I am dying to see what you all made around the holidays!

But first, here is something I whipped up a while ago.

My little sister just had her first baby-- a boy. And if you have been around for a while, you know my feelings on boys. I haven't a clue what to make for them! My world consists of princesses and pink and lace.

Out to prove me wrong, my sister asked for some long johns for little Max and his cousin.

I have always thought that making baby jammies would be much more work than it was worth. Turns out it was really fun, once I actually sat down and did it! The only thing I didn't enjoy was putting in all those gripper snaps.

How was your Christmas?

We had too much fun!

My girls fave gift was from Daddy:

Ummmm, ya. They pretty much love it. We even figured out a way to set it up in our living room. Crazy, right?

And it was finally something that held their attention for more than a minute, unlike every other toy we own in our home. It is something that completely confuses me. When I was a kid, I played dolls hour after hour after hour. Until I was like 16 or so.

No, really.

And I have to say, I still kinda have a 'thing' for dolls. If I had the money and the space, I would love to collect them.

And I would start with the cute little Blythe dolls that they sell with Littlest Pet Shop.

Aren't these adorable? Sooo, sooo. . . . vintage-y! I would love to have a 'real' one, but goodness! So expensive! (I've considered ~~stealing~~ borrowing my girls little Blythe dolls, but it is amazing how quickly they can lose the shoes and rat the hair!)

Another of my current favorites are the Lalaloopsy dolls.

How fun would it be to sew for these little cuties? A great way to use up scraps.

But alas. . .

Not enough time. . . not enough money. . . not enough space.

Every once in a while, something comes along in life that changes the priorities in your life.

Something that makes you stop and think.

Something that basically scares you enough to change.

Last month our family experienced one of those times.

K2, my sweet, vibrant little six year old, started having some medical issues.

Yucky, yucky, yucky.

Thankfully she has been diagnosed, has a wonderful doctor, has very few (if any) side-effects from her meds, and has a good possiblity of growing out of this in a few years.

There are a few side-effects for Mama, however. And one is a re-focus on family. So, thank you for being patient with me while I took a LONG bloggy break.

Teacher Gifts

Sooo, last Christmas, on the last day of school, I recieved the

'Worst Mom Award.'

My first grader got in the car and told me that everyone in her class got her teacher a gift, except for her. And her teacher even asked her where her present was. Bad day for Momma.

This year I could NOT let her down. And let me tell you, if ever there was a week when a Momma could be excused from trivialities, this would be it.

But Friday morning found me at the sewing machine finishing a few of these:

These are Dana's Hobo Sacks. So easy and fun to make. Just the perfect size!

And I filled them with a few of my favorite things:

Clementines and a Jamba Juice gift card. Just the kind of thing I would love to recieve. . . hopefully they will love it as much!

Now I need some more ideas, since this is just the first of MANY, MANY years of teacher gifts. What do you give your kid's teachers?

Sooooo. . . I have this issue with whoever came up with ROY G BIV. I have always loved rainbows and colorful things.

But what is with the indigo? Three primary colors, three secondary colors and. . . one tertiary color? Why? If indigo is in the rainbow, then orange/red, and yellow/green should also be there, shouldn't they? Was indigo just added so that they could have a cute little acronym for the elementary art students?

Whatever.

Despite my issues, this ROY G BIV Can-Can skirt actually turned out rather cute and bright.

I am behind. By at least 11 days. But here we are. . .

My stocking for charity-- St. PJs Childrens Home to be specific.

Now, what is the chance I will be able to get this month's challenge done?

This month we are making things for orphan children in China. We can make bibs, quilts, pillowcases, or taggies. I haven't even had a chance to figure out which I want to make yet. . .

In the News. . .

Thank you for all your kind words. You all made me feel so much better! And it is amazing how it only takes one 'real' family issue to remind you how silly all your previous complaints were.

But anyway. . .

Just wanted to make you aware of a couple of fun items in the news.

First, Ashley at Lil Blue Boo is hosting another design contest. YES!!! Can I just tell you how much fun these are? I have so many ideas, hopefully I will find time to make a couple!

Second, Sew Mama Sew is hosting another giveaway day. Yay!

So tell me, what is your favorite giveaway to enter? Do you prefer fabric or patterns, like me? Or do you like homemade items?

Curtains are the DEVIL!

It's been one of those days. . .

You know the kind where you start out with visions of sewing most of the day.

And then. . .

You decide that even though you are just about out of funds for food for the week, there are a few errands you just HAVE to run. . . which turn into a few more and at each and every place, you spend 30-40 dollars and realize by the time you get home that you spent your ENTIRE weekly budget and didn't come home with anything to fix for dinner tonight or tomorrow or the next night. . .

And then you get home and find that one of your purchases inadvertantly was left in a different store than the store the purchase was actually from. They don't have the purchase and can't find it.

Tell me, how many people out there in a small town in Idaho really need 2 pairs of navy leggings in a girls size small? Why wouldn't they turn it in? I mean REALLY.

And in the last store, your potty-training 2 year old wets her pants and the child seat in the shopping cart. No, I didn't bring a diaper. No, I didn't bring extra clothes. And yes, we had visited each and every public bathroom.

Finally get home and bathe the kids. Take a few deep breathes, eat some chocolate and think, 'Okay, I can handle this. It isn't that bad. I'm okay, I just need to accomplish something and I will feel better.'

So I decide to hang a curtain rod and curtains that I just purchased for my two living room windows. We do not own any power tools, so hanging a curtain rod requires a lot of effort. Anyway, I was starting to feel a little better, since I actually hung one rod without too much blood, sweat and tears.

Then I pull out the curtain panels, kind of excited to see how they will look.

And guess what? There is only one panel in each package. Just one. Like who in the world would ever just need ONE curtain? Do you know anyone with with a window that measures 20 inches wide by 50-something inches long?

They were purchased from TJ Maxx, which means they most likely will NOT have two more panels. Which means I am going to have to beg them to take back the two that I have hanging in my living room. And what the heck! They were so expensive-- for each panel! I mean it is just a piece of fabric for crying out loud!

And the only reason I went out today in the first place, is because I didn't want to attempt sewing another set of curtains after the LAST incident. . .

And while I am typing this sad story for you, my girls somehow managed to ruin brownie batter, from a box (must take after their mom!), and I realized that I recently removed the program from my computer that uploads the pictures from my camera. And she peed again. On me and the couch.

Heaven help me!

A Bloggy Thank-You!!!

I have been wanting to write this post for several months now, and finally found the inspiration the other day to push me to do it.

I'm sure you all are familiar with Disney from Ruffles n' Stuff. She has recently taken a break from blogging-- a long break. But she popped in the other day with a 'sponsored blog post', and the very first commentor left an extrememly rude comment. Click here to view the comments.

For those of you familiar with Disney, you have some idea of the hours and hours she has spent creating things, photographing her creations, writing detailed tutorials and sharing it all with us. . . and all without ever making any money for it!

When I was young, my mother sewed most of my sister's and my clothing. And in order to do this she had to options:

1. Buy a pattern.

2. Make a pattern herself.

Our generation has an information highway with mostly free information, and we have gotten to the point where we just seem to expect everything for free. And something that I have realized with having my own blog, is that all that free info costs someone ALOT of their free time.

So today, I am first of all thankful for all those fabulous commenters that take the time to show their appreciation and love. Even if I don't respond to each of you individually, I read every comment and love them! Thank you, thank you!

And also a

HUGE THANKSGIVING THANK YOU

for all those that spend so much of their time and effort to create amazing blogs and tutorials for nothing or very little. Even those with small blogs and few followers. . . thanks for sharing with the world!

Some Ruffling. . .

Part of the Halloween costumes included pettiskirts--

nylon chiffon pettiskirts.

Five of them.

Which means cutting, sewing and ruffling

300 yards of ruffles, and 150 yards of tiers.

But it was really fun, albeit slightly tedious.

The Thrifted Throne

Way back when I started this blog, I seriously lacked photography skills. Like here and here.

As I have taken more pictures, I have slowly improved to the point where once in a while I get a picture I really like.

But something that always stumps me is. . .

winter!

The cold and I do NOT get along well. And since most of the clothing items I make belong in a Vegas climate, my cute girlies aren't friends with the cold, either.

My home does not get great light in any room of the house.

I don't own cutsie/vintage/aqua-colored knick-knacks that make pictures unbelievably gorgeous. (See here and here).

So, for the last little while I have been searching during my thrift store trips for a chair, hoping to find something that would improve my winter/inside photos.

And here is what I found:

For $5 I found this fancy, old, velvety chair. Now, if I were a craftier person, I would paint it aqua, distress it and recover it with some Anna Maria. . .

But. . . I'm just not. So it will have to do.

And it looked very royal -as is- for the Red Queen's throne:

Have any of you ever quilted with knits? I love how soft the end quilt is, but there are many things I still need to learn. . . Too many ripples!

Any tips for quilting knits? I definitely need to add some interfacing next time. . .

I don't think I have mentioned this yet, but I am part of a group called 'a Dozen Quilters'. It is similar to a virtual quilting bee, but instead of making quilts for ourselves, each month we make something to donate to the organization of choice of the person of the month. For November, we are donating stockings and gift cards to St. PJ's Children's Home in San Antonio, Texas. It is an orphanage as well as a family counseling center. And of course a place like that has many needs.

Sooooo, I had a birthday this past week (and yes, I am ~~still~~ 29, in case you are wondering). And I am contemplating what to do with my birthday money.

Since fabric is out of the question (it is coming out of my ears!), the next thing on my wishlist is Japanese pattern books. But I am having a hard time narrowing it down. . .

Do I want the book with this adorable outfit?

Or this one?

Or perhaps I should get one that is for me for a change. . .

I have found a couple of stores that sell Japanese pattern books that have so many to choose from, I am overwhelmed! I am beginning to think these patten books are kinda like potato chips. . . betcha can't buy just one!
